MOLECULAR GENETICS PATHOLOGY FELLOWSHIP

2008-2009 Program Information:

Institution name:
University of Arizona and Southern Arizona VA Health Care System

Description of program:
The fellowship provides training in molecular pathology to prepare individuals to direct a molecular diagnostics laboratory for clinical and anatomic pathology. Training provides the fellow with theory, vocabulary, and concepts to integrate with the extensive hands-on, practical experiences in pathology translational molecular diagnostics, and medical genetics. Upon completion, the fellow will have a skill set to understand and evaluate the rapidly changing field of molecular diagnostics and genetic disease. Training includes molecular biology theory and applications, laboratory management, clinical consultations, and method and procedure development. The fellow will gain experience with laboratory robotics, nucleic acid extraction, traditional and real-time PCR, amplicon detection techniques, FISH, rep-PCR, SNP analysis, and capillary electrophoresis. Training includes rotations that focus on molecular hematopathology, infectious disease, and oncology with additional rotations in cytogenetics, medical genetics, and HLA laboratories. Experience with flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, automated immunohistochemistry staining and quantitation, laser-capture microdissection techniques, DNA sequencing, microarray, and bioinformatics will also be available as options. Potential research projects include basic, translational or clinical research with primary focus on hematopathology, infectious disease, or molecular oncology. Manuscript preparation and written and oral presentations will be encouraged. The program has affiliations with the Colleges of Medicine and Public Health, the Arizona Cancer Center, the Arizona Health Science Center, the Biomedical Research Foundation of Southern Arizona, the BIO5 Institute for Collaborative Research, the Southwest Oncology Group and Veteran’s Affairs National Biorepository.
