The Department of Pathology has 14 residency positions, typically 3-4 in each of the  four years.  The majority of residents are recruited from throughout the United States, and there are usually a few University of Arizona graduates. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are selected based on the same criteria as U. S. graduates. About one-third to one-fourth of residents are AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha) in medical school. We also offer accredited fellowships in hematopathology and molecular genetics pathology and a fellowship in surgical pathology. These fellows are a valuable source of teaching and assistance to residents. Similarly, three post-sophomore fellows (PSFs) rotate through pathology for a year, chiefly on Anatomic Pathology. These bright and dedicated medical students have completed at least two years of training, including the Pathology course, and function in part as junior residents. They keep the workload manageable and learn and teach along with the residents.

Residents rotate in one or two-month blocks with Anatomic and Clinical Pathology fully integrated to complete their 36 months of core rotations (18 months of Anatomic and 18 months of Clinical Pathology),  electives (6 months), and advanced Surgical Pathology (6 months) to complete the four years needed for American Board of Pathology.  Rotations are personalized as much as possible to allow residents to gain appropriate experience in their areas of special interest, whether they are planning on a private practice or academic career.

Throughout residency training, we place emphasis on individual instruction, assessment of the resident’s strengths and needs, and graded responsibility. Teaching is aimed at acquiring competency in all aspects of pathology and creating a desire for lifelong learning, but includes the information to pass Board examinations as well.
